EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE — Close to 30 houses for genocide survivors in Rwempasha sector, Nyagatare District are nearly completed.

Each of the houses has four bed rooms and sitting room, toilet and kitchen. They will be officially commissioned by the district in July 2008, authorities said.

Anselme Majoro Rurangwa, the district vice Mayor in charge of finance and economic development revealed this during the inspection of the houses by district officials on Wednesday.

"We are planning to unveil these houses officially on July 6, we want everyone to settle in his/her house because it has been overdue,” the vice Mayor said.

According to the district officials, the construction of the houses in the area started in October 2007.

Rurangwa said that the construction work of the 28 houses was funded by the Fund for Genocide Survivors (FARG).

"Our work as a district was to identify the sector with most needy genocide survivors while FARG met the cost of materials needed for constructing these houses. The district also supervised the construction process up to this stage,” Rurangwa told reporters.

The beneficiaries are elderly women and men, widows and disabled people who were affected by the 1994 Genocide. According to the vice Mayor, Rwempasha was chosen because it is the model Sector in Nyagatare.
