KARONGI — Rwanda Purpose Driven Ministry has given out over 250 eye glasses to people with eye defects in Karongi District.

The donations followed days of free eye check up during which 35 people with eye defects were treated including children and adults. At least 20 of the group were children.

About 400 people turned up for the free eye check up. The donors include a team from the Maryland University of the US working under the Saddle Back Church.

"We have identified and given out reading glasses with lenses and treated some infections,” said Moses Ndahiro a worker with the Ministries. He said they had examined some eye defects beyond their immediate handling and they would return the results later.

"There have been major infections but we have gotten solutions to most of them,” one of the medical officials said.

According to officials, the Purpose Driven Ministries team had identified Karongi district as a place with many diseases.

They intervened under their Peace Programme that fights the five global challenges of poverty, ignorance, disease, corruption and spiritual emptiness.

"After realizing that Karongi fell under the areas affected by diseases, we communicated with pastors from the different denominations in Kibuye to identify the most common diseases and they chose eye treatment, "said Ndahiro.

Meanwhile, the same Ministry has also embarked on training pastors on how to operate the internet in order to facilitate communication.

The Saddle Back Church and the Purpose Driven Ministries has previously offered to reconstruct Kibuye Hospital and the work is about to start.

Other areas of intervention in Kibuye include primary health care services among communities.
