It was a nostalgic night as people reminisced about their days in high school at the usual end of the month Spoken Word Rwanda session held at Le Chateau Restaurant in Nyarutarama on Wednesday 27th March. The night was held under the theme "Back to School”. The recitals were about high school events and the kind of poetry written then. About the theme, Diana Mpyisi, one of the organisers said, "We decided on a playful theme for this month. We wanted a theme where people can come and share spoken word and stories about their high school experiences and primarily, engage with the audience.”The audience that waited for two hours in the cold forgot about the frostiness the moment the event started. The audience laughed, clapped and cheered on those who told the stories. Different people from different schools and countries spoke about their experiences. It didn’t matter who told the story, it was interesting to hear about how these adults made a fool of themselves in their teen years. The performances were random as anyone volunteered. Also, the MC of the night picked on random people in the audience to narrate some of their experiences. If one wasn’t comfortable with the poem, the alternative was to tell a story of their favourite/unforgettable memories of high school. Some memories were about funny teachers or the person’s mischievous acts in school. To make the night more fun, organisers held a competition where five people composed a poem on the stage under the theme, "My High School Crush”. The winner was to enjoy a dinner for two at the restaurant. The poem and stories were supplemented by songs from one member of the audience who also closed off the event. He sang live and played a guitar. The event started at 9:00pm and ended at 11:00pm.
