Team Rwanda pair of Hassan Rukundo and Nathan Byukusenge finished in the 44th position in the Absa Cape Epic 2013 Mountain Bike race which ran from March 17 -24 in South Africa.The pair rode the 698 kilometre rave in a time of 37h32’10’’6. The other team members Jean de Dieu Uwimana Rafiki and Alastair Sussock finished in 158 position after clocking 48h24’02’’1.Switzerland’s Christoph Sauser and Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic won the week-long race after clocking 29h40’44’’9.The gruelling competition attracted a total of 626 teams and 1256 riders from across the world. Rwanda had four riders divided into two pairs of Byukusenge with Rukundo and Uwimana Rafiki with Alastair Sussock Akina Abahizi cycling Club, who was making his team as a Team Rwanda rider.Meanwhile, Adrien Niyonshuti has started light training after his South African based MTN-Qhubeka had ruled him out of action for the rest of the season with an illness.The Rwandan rider, the first black to race in the Mountain Bike category at the 2012 Olympics, was recently diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, normally in the legs."Now I feel better, I have started the trainings and I hope to return to my level soon. I have hope everything will be fine” said the 27-year -old.
