Gloomy trip. NUR students injured in road accident

Engineering students from the National University of Rwanda (NUR) were, yesterday, involved in a road accident when the college bus they were travelling in overturned in Rugarika sector, Kamonyi district.

Engineering students from the National University of Rwanda (NUR) were, yesterday, involved in a road accident when the college bus they were travelling in overturned in Rugarika sector, Kamonyi district.

The bus was carrying at least 80 students, some of whom sustained serious injuries. The accident occurred at around 1:15pm, according to the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Hubert Gashagaza.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established, but Police said they suspect the driver was speeding. By press time, the number of the injured was not yet clear with sources giving varying figures. However, eyewitnesses estimated the number to be between 15 and 20, of which five were allegedly in critical condition.

The injured had, by press time, been taken to Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), where they were receiving treatment, the NUR acting Rector, Prof Manasseh Mbonye, told The New Times on phone.

The second-year Engineering students were heading to Kigali for a practical study trip when the accident occurred, Prof. Mbonye said. [By Jean Pierre Bucyensenge]
