A woman was shot dead in Kigali yesterday around 3:30 pm in Nyabisindu Cell, Remera Sector, by a man witnesses say was an ex-lover.
According to the Central Region Police spokesperson, Supt Albert Gakara, the suspect worked as a security guard in the same neighbourhood, naming the victim as 21-year old Afsa Uwingeneye.
According to neighbours, the two were cohabiting until four months ago.
The suspect, names withheld, shot the victim with a short-gun reportedly owned by his employer, though the latter has denied owning the weapon.
It is alleged that the suspect fired at the victim three rounds of shots, instantly killing her, over accusations that she had taken his property when they separated.
"I called on phone by the suspect shortly after I heard the gunshots. He told me he had killed his ex-lover and I immediately called police and we rushed to the scene,” said Syldio Rwagasore, the in-charge of security in the cell.
"We found him at the scene and he did not resist arrest,” he said.
According to the local leader, the incident took place at the suspect’s workplace where the victim had gone to visit her former lover.
The body of the diseased was taken to Kacyiru Police Hospital for autopsy while the culprit is held at Remera Police Station for further investigation, according to the police.
