Rwanda has been invited to take part in this year’s ICC/ACA U-17 East African boys’ cricket tournament. The tournament, which runs from July 1-5, will be staged in Kampala, Uganda.

But unlike Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania who have been regular participants in the event over the last couple of years, Rwanda’s youngsters are only making their debut.

Meanwhile, local cricket governing body, RCA has appointed rising star Evode Mutuyimana to lead the team after a successfully leading the U-15s during last year’s ICC/ACA U-15 East African boys’ tournament.

Rwanda who were only making their maiden appearance finished third after a fine display against Tanzania.

"Mutuyimana is the best choice. He has fairly good exposure after captaining the U-15s in last year’s ICC tournament,” the U-17 team manager Emma Byiringiro explained.

The 16-year-old who is already a full Rwandan international was part of the national cricket team that featured in the ICC World Cricket League Div 3 tournament that was held in South Africa back in April.

Although he did not feature for Rwanda in South Africa, Byiringiro concedes that the exposure came in handy for the Challengers’ all-rounder.
