Mobile Telecommunication providers MTN Rwandacel has injected Frw20 million into this year’s Amahoro Cup, which got underway yesterday.

MTN becomes the first company to sponsor the annual championship, which is the second most prestigious football event in the country after the national league.

The sponsorship package was announced yesterday by MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer Themba Khumalo at their head offices in Nyarutarama.

While announcing the package, Khumalo said that the sponsorship was a sign that re-affirmed MTN Rwanda’s commitment and passion for the development of football not only in Rwanda but across the African continent.

"MTN’s commitment to the greatest sport in the world is unquestionable. As a group we have supported numerous regional, continental and global soccer tournaments like the FIFA 2010,” Khumalo stated.

On his part, Ferwafa boss, Brig. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura said, "We strongly value the relationship between MTN and Ferwafa.”

"This sponsorship comes after other numerous engagements of support that we have shared and indeed this sponsorship will solidify the tournament by making it more competitive in nature,” Kazura acknowledged.

The sponsorship comes days after MTN group launched its global 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, a tournament which will be held for the first time on the African continent in South Africa.

The sponsorship will cater for the required logistics, prizes and trophies and some administrative costs. The partnership between MTN and Ferwafa stretches for years now.

MTN was the first to sponsor the 1999 Cecafa Challenge Cup which was held in Rwanda.

MTN Rwanda also sponsored the Amavubi Stars on its maiden historical entry to the 2004 African Nations Cup finals held in Tunisia. Other than being an official sponsor of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, MTN is the title sponsors of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, the preliminary stage of the Peace cup continues today with defending champions APR battling second division side Espoir in Nyanza. Seven other fixtures were played yesterday.
