Dear editor,

It’s very embarrassing that we hardly have swimming galas or competitions in this country.

When you look at newspapers from our neighboring countries, you will notice that they have regular swimming competitions at secondary school level, university level and national level.

Apart from the obvious health benefits of swimming, who knows, may be Rwanda would have had a genuine shot at the forthcoming Olympics in Beijing, China.

Like in the past, Rwanda has always fielded two or three swimmers but I’m keen to know the criteria for choosing these athletes because honestly speaking, you rarely hear of swimming events in the country.

I’m therefore calling upon the ministry of youth and sports to look into this issue. Find out if the country has a swimming governing body and if it does, if that body functions effectively.
