Education Minister Vincent Biruta has challenged the youth in universities to work with local authorities and work towards the development of the country.Dr Biruta, who was speaking at the weekend during the conclusion of a countrywide campaign, said the impact of the students will be much felt if they, on a routine basis, work with local leaders in their respective communities to spur development.The exercise, that saw more than 60,000 students from 22 institutions of higher learning undertake in various community outreach programmes, was spearheaded by the Forum of Rwandan Higher Institutions of Higher Learning Students’ Union (FAGER).FAGER president Daniel Komezusenge said the objective of the exercise was to widen and deepen cooperation among the students in order to have a common channel of sharing ideas so as to take services to the community.The field exercise started on March 9 with activities in 26 districts tailored according to the needs of the population where students are based."We had promised the President that we would not always meet him with questions instead tangible actions. What we did during this period is part of that promise,” Komezusenge said.The Nyabihu vice mayor for economic affairs, Angel Mukaminani, said this was a good sign that the country’s future leaders can interact freely with the local people.The Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, told students to be keen on using social media such as Facebook and Twiter.Nsengimana urged the students to decentralise their knowledge by working hand-in-hand with local leaders to have a good development plan.
