EASTERN PROVINCE

RWAMAGANA — District officials and Police commanders in the Eastern districts are undergoing training in security skills in order to enhance their role in crime prevention.

The participants include Directors of education, Directors of good governance, District Police commanders and church leaders from across the province.

"The aim is to help Community Policing Liaison Officers (CLOs) to acquire more knowledge on Community Policing in order to teach Community Policing Committees (CPC) and residents in their areas of jurisdiction,” the national director of Community Policing told The New Times after opening the workshop at Hotel Dereva on June 24.

Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Butera said the training was paramount in reducing crime. During the training the participants will among other things get briefing on introduction to Community Policing, Community Policing Principles, National Police Crime Reduction Strategies, and problems of domestic violence in Rwanda.

The training is also meant to empower participants in detecting crimes committed in their community and ways of eradicating genocide ideology, said Butera. Trainees are expected to disseminate the knowledge learnt to residents in their localities.

Butera said he was optimistic that the training would create uniform understanding amongst participants in order to help the police in curbing down crime rates.

"The aim is to achieve police’s crime prevention strategy,” Butera noted.

While officially opening the training, the area governor Dr. Ephraim Kabaija appealed to participants to aim at raising peoples’ understanding on Community Policing.

The Governor requested participants to reinforce the province’s effort in reducing crimes.
