The business community could soon overcome the problem of inadequate packaging materials as plans to establish a plant to make the bags are in advanced stages. The plant will cost $2 million dollars.In interview with The New Times, Leon Sebutakirwa, the manager of Alternative Packaging Solution Ltd, a local company that will set up the plant, said they want to intervene and provide a solution to the problem."The feasibility study was done and we are now trying to solicit for funds and I am optimistic that by May, we shall have obtained the funds and immediately start construction,” he said.The plant, that will be set up in Bugesera district, Eastern Province, will produce environmentally-friendly materials that will also be exported to regional countries.Local manufacturers consider the packaging materials a burning issue due to the cost incurred from importing them. This, they say, puts their products at a competitive disadvantage in regional markets.Florence Ndoli, the proprietor of Ndoli Joint Supermarket in Kisementi, Kigali, welcomed the plans, adding that the paper bags that they normally use are of poor quality."We can’t use these bags to pack some products such as beef because it will just seep through, but if the new plant will provide the bags, it’s good news to us,” she said.
