A private education survey draft report of Rwanda has indicated that Kigali tops in the private schools’ student enrolment. The survey was carried out by an undisclosed Uganda-based consultancy firm.

This was revealed during a presentation by Bernard Mfitumukiza, who was part of the study team, to private education sector stakeholders on Monday at Hotel des Mille Collines.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank group member and Rwanda Development Bank (BRD) were launching a consultation support programme for private education in Rwanda.

Kigali city students enrolment is 34,239, Eastern province has 17,325; Northern, 14,379; Southern, 27,979, while the Western province has 20,948. Of the close to 150,000 students, half of them are female, with Kigali having the biggest number - 16473.

The draft report also revealed that Kigali has the biggest number of private schools - with 92 of the 311 in the whole country.

The study was carried out in 34 schools based on selective sampling, in nine primary schools, 19 secondary schools and six tertiary institutions. A final report is expected to be out in July and will be presented to the Ministry of Education for approval.
