Kigali International Peace Marathon set for May 19

The 9th edition of the Kigali International Peace marathon will be held May 19, organisers, Rwanda Athletics Federation, confirmed on Friday.

The 9th edition of the Kigali International Peace marathon will be held May 19, organisers, Rwanda Athletics Federation, confirmed on Friday.The event is organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Sports and Culture alongside Soroptimist international. The annually marathon will cover a total of 41,195 km.  The chairman of the RAF, Jean Damascene Nkezabo said that this year’s event will involve a country-wide tour of the peace torch.The peace torch relay will cover all four provinces and Kigali City, "the peace torch relays will jumpstart the marathon. It will be the part of the proceeds from the event would be used to support the peace for people,” he said."We need support from all Rwandans because this sport is about the people t” Nkezabo noted. He added, "We want to have the best marathon ever so that why we have partners like ‘MPRESS Africa Communications because we want to have a professionally organized event.”The event is expected to attract a record 5000 participants from across the world. Last year’s event attracted 2000 participants. The marathon was initiated in country in 2005; athletes from Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, and other continents will take part.Last year Kenyans dominated the tournament, where Paul Kosjei after clocking 2h, 14minutes and 56 seconds with price of 2500$, while Eliud Magut an Willy Korir followed respectively.
