Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) is planning to hold a schools’ competition on taxes. Annette Birungi, the tax body’s publicist yesterday said that different secondary schools around Kigali City are expected to participate in the contest.
This is part of the RRA 10th anniversary celebrations. According to the publicist, the competition will take place at Telecom house tomorrow.
Over 40 students from 10 schools will be interviewed in groups of four about taxation issues in general. The winners will then be given a one-year bursary each.
"This is to inculcate taxpaying culture into the young generation,” Birungi said.
The tax body also intends to use this competition as a proactive mobilisation of the education sector to introduce the taxation topic in schools.
This year’s competition comes at a time government tasked RRA and Ministry of Education to jointly introduce taxation subject on the school syllabus.
According to Birungi, the competition is further to showcase RRA as a social organisation that wants children in the country to develop a competitive spirit and cultivate a reading culture.
This is the fifth time such a competition is taking place. At the beginning of April this year, RRA also partnered with Ministry of Education to train thousands of teachers on the role of taxation as an effort to increase the levels of tax compliance.
