As the counting of votes exercise continues across the country following the Monday March 4 General elections, surprises are continuing to be witnessed as seasoned politicians are being ousted. The biggest shock comes in Cherangany where immediate former MP Joshua Kutuny has bitten the dust, bowing down to defending Boston Marathon Champion Wesley Kipchumba Korir who ran as an independent candidate. This is according to the provisional results that are being released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).Speaking to NTV in Cherangany, Kipchumba was delighted being elected as the new Cherangany MP and said it was the will of the people that had spoken."I ran as an independent candidate because I believed in my own ideologies and not those of all the mainstream parties. I am glad I won. It is a win of the people of Cherangany,” he said. He says that he is planning on defending his Boston Marathon title later on in April."I am not planning to quit athletics. In fact I am training really hard because I want to defend my Boston Marathon title in April,” he said. Korir led a Kenyan podium sweep in last year’s Boston Marathon after clocking 2:12:40, ahead of compatriots Levy Matebo who was second and Bernard Kipyego who finished third.Agencies
