Women in Kirehe district have committed to unchain themselves from traditional stereotypes and prejudices.Stereotypes involve generalisations about the typical characteristics of members of a group.The women made the vow during a National Council for Women (CNF) congress in Kirehe district, yesterday.Addressing the district council general assembly, CNF district coordinator Flora Uwanyirigira, said women are motivated to be equals in society, adding that the congress aimed at reflecting on the successes and failures of programmes set by the council last year."The congress made an evaluation leading to future plans. What is promising is that women from all walks of life are committed more than ever, to economically emancipate themselves,” Uwanyirigira said."It makes more sense when we are talking about rural women, who are most affected by social stereotypes and prejudice,” she added.Meanwhile, the congress agreed that vulnerable women in communities would be given a hand to live a meaningful life.CNF coordinator in the Eastern Province, Alice Uwingabiye, said rural women’s economic status was poor, adding that the most needy would benefit from the assistance, which will, among others, involve awareness drives on nutrition and family planning.
