Rwanda names squad for Davis Cup Africa Group IV tourney

Rwandan tennis youngster Claude Ishimwe is among the five-man squad that will take part in the 2023 Davis Cup Africa Group IV tournament due in Kigali from July 26-29.

Rwanda has confirmed a five-man squad that will take part in the 2023 Davis Cup Africa Group IV tournament due in Kigali from July 26-29.

The hosts are among eight countries which will have representatives at the four-day tournament which will see young tennis players bring the Tennis show at the clay courts at Kigali Ecology Tennis Club.

Other countries set to participate in the Davis Cup Africa Group IV include Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique and Nigeria.

The top two countries will be promoted in Group III while the last two will relegated in Group V.

The Rwanda squad, coached by Dieudonne Habiyambere, includes Etienne Niyigena, Ernest Habiyambere, Junior Hakizumwami, Joshua Muhire and Claude Ishimwe.

Rwanda hosted the 2022 edition which left Togo crowned champions after the hosts in the final.

Rwanda has been competing in the Davis Cup since 2001. The country’s best performance was in 2019 when they earned a Group III promotion after winning the Group IV tournament in Brazzaville.

Eric Hagenimana, Alain Hakizimana and Jean-Claude Gasigwa are the best players Rwanda has ever produced through to the Davis Cup.
