The Executive Council of African football governing (CAF) body has made some key amendments to club competition rules which grant no second chance to teams which will be eliminated from the champions league.
The Council’s General Assembly held in Morocco on Friday, July 7, approved an amendment cancelling the playoff round of the CAF Confederation Cup effective 2023-24 season. This means that teams that are knocked out of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round won't get the chance to participate in the Confederation Cup.
"The Executive Committee approved the cancellation of the additional second preliminary of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup," CAF statement reads in part.
"This means that the 16 winning Clubs of the Second Preliminary round will qualify to the Group Stage of both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2023-2024 season," it added.
The new development is great news for clubs who have often struggled to get to the Group stage of CAF competitions in recent years due to the tight nature.
League champions APR FC will present Rwanda at the CAF Champions League while Peace Cup winners Rayon Sports will play the Confederation Cup.
