This fashion season brings us a trend for those of us that channel the high-intensity female leads, the strong, fierce women leaders of our generation. If you’re a force to be reckoned with, make sure to stock up on bootdals. A bootdal is another hybrid trend this season: the mix of a boot and sandal. This trend is an extension of the gladiator trend, the strappy open sandals that are based on the shoe of the combatants in ancient. The bootdal takes the gladiator style to a new level: adding height on the look, either with a heel or extension of the shoe to the calf. All designers across fashion styles are picking up this trend. Up and coming designer Alexander Wang, known for his edgy, androgynous works, crafted 4.5 inch black leather bootdal that extends just below the knee. Joseph Altuzarra, a multi-cultural force of a designer who launched his own line after working with premier design houses Mark Jacobs and Proenza Schoulder, crafted a sky-high brown stiletto with leather straps that extends over the knee. Jimmy Choo, a strong contender for the most reputable and desired shoe atelier, designed bootdals in varying heights this season, staying with stilettos, open toes, and lace at the top. For a different take on the gladiator look, Jimmy Choo crafted his creations out of suede, instead of the traditional leather. The bootdal does not stop there, many of the shoe gods and goddesses of the fashion world are uping up their collections for the trend, including: Stuart Weitzman, Salvatore Ferragamo, Rachel Zoe, Nicholas Kirkwood, Manolo Blahnik and Valentino. As per usual, the celebrity scene is picking the trend up in full force. Singing sensation and tween icon Miley Cyrus stepped out in the Hollywood sun with a pair of flat, black bootdals. She paired them with black leggings, a red striped sweater and blue tank. Rihanna has rocked her art deco Balenciaga bootdals multiple times, wearing them on a talk show and out and about around her home in California. Oscar winning actress and full-time mom Gwyneth Paltrow has rocked the bootdal look on multiple occasions as well. For a dressier look, she paired brown bootdals with a strapless black full skirt dress, and a cuff for the only jewelry. For a slightly understated look, she wore flat metallic bootdals with a neutral colored blazer and slacks. For the higher bootdals, pair with shorter dresses and skirts. For the lower bootdals, pair with capris. Also looks great with blazers. But be careful -- the gladiator look has been around for several seasons, to be sure to keep the look fresh by either adding heel height or boot height. Stay away from flat ankle gladiators, they aren’t on trend anymore. That’s the fashion scoop for this week. Got a thought? Trend? Style you hate? Send it my way.
