The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has turned down a request by Rwanda Volleyball Federation to postpone the Club Championships, scheduled to be held when Rwanda is commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.Rwanda is supposed to be represented by APR men and women teams in the continental meet slated for April 3-11 but it will be during the time when Rwanda will be remembering the Genocide against the Tutsi.The men’s championship is slated for 3-11 April in Libya, while the women’s event will be held in Madagascar on April 4-14. The top three teams will participate in World Cup Club Championship in May in Doha, Qatar.According to FRVB chairman Gustave Nkurunziza, "FRVB is aware of the CAVB calendar but we have given our reasons for wanting the postponement, but we are yet to decide what to do so that our team can participle in the Africa Club championship.”Last year, CAVB chairman Dr. Amr Elwan promised in principle during his visit to Rwanda that no continental event would be held at a time the country is commemorating the 1994 Genocide, however, that promise didn’t come to pass in the CAVB congress. It is not the first time Rwandan teams miss to participate in a continental competition due to the genocide commemoration period. In 2000, APR Football Club lost to Esparence de Tunis 7-0 in first leg but skipped the return leg, which was supposed to be played during the commemoration week and as a result were banned form competing in CAF competitions for three years.However, the ban was lifted the following year, allowing the army side return to the competitions. A similar situation arose again in 2005, but this time the club survived any form of punishment.Meanwhile, the national junior team won this year’s Father Kayumba Memorial tournament held at Group Officiel de Butare on Saturday. The junior team beat the National University of Rwanda 1-3 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22, and 25-16) in the final.
