Organizers, Mukura Victory Sport today at Nyamirambo stadium take on rivals Rayon Sport in the two legged final of this year’s Genocide memorial cup this afternoon at Huye stadium, Southern Province.

For the second year running, the annual tournament which is organized in honor of Mukura players, officials and fans who perished in the 1994 Tutsi genocide, has attracted only two teams.

Last year, APR joined Mukura in the commemoration tournament and it was the organizers who befittingly did a double over the league champions.

Mukura won the first game 1-0 in Huye before handing the military side one of their heaviest defeat in local football in form a 5-1 drabbing at Amahoro stadium.

The event was first played in 1994 with four teams, Mukura, Rayon, Intare and the National University of Rwanda (NUR) participating teams but over the years, not only the teams but even the local football governing body, Ferwafa have shunned it.

But it was the second edition that attracted Rwanda’s finest in form of APR, Rayon, Kiyovu and the hosts, Mukura.

Asked why teams have shunned what seems to be a tournament for a noble cause, the spokesman for Mukura VS said Wellars Mugengana said, "Most teams we invite claim that the tournament collides with their plans for the national calendar.”
