GICUMBI —  A min-expo opened on Wednesday in Byumba town, Gicumbi District with a call made to farmers to increase production in order to improve food security.

The five days trade fair attracted local manufacturers, agricultural and livestock farmers, bee farmers and MTN telecom’s products, among others.

"You should stop using traditional ways of farming because they lead to fewer yields,” said Protais Musoni, the minister of Local Government who officially opened the expo.

Members of the Northern Province Private Sector Federation (PSF), Kenyan and Ethiopian business entrepreneurs were among the participants.

The minister toured and participated in terrace construction at Nyamiyaga Cell of Kageyo Sector, high yield agricultural site commonly known as "Indatwa hill”. He also addressed agricultural officers from all districts and from Kigali city.

"You should use the knowledge acquired from this site to increase agricultural production in your districts,” Musoni advised the officials.

During his tour, the minister also visited crop and animal farms belonging to two residents Françoise Mugiraneza and John Nkunzurwanda.

The former was used as a model wheat and livestock farmer, while the latter grows high yield irish potatoes in Kageyo Sector.

Governor Boniface Rucagu, the provincial governor advised participants who converged at the show to maintain the spirit of hard work and desist from  genocide ideology. 

He further advised participants to build more hotels in the province in order to attract tourists and generate more revenue.
