MUSANZE — Local authorities in Musanze district have destroyed illegal drugs and illicit alcohol including crude waragi, marijuana and papers used in making fake currency notes.

The illegal drugs were discovered and collected over the last six months by the Police and the Department of prosecution. Court in Musanze has been found to have the highest number profiles of drugs trafficking.

About 890 litres of crude waragi and 1200 sackets of marijuana worth Frw2 million were destroyed.

According to the district Mayor Celestin Karabayinga, the illegal drugs were being trafficked from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and from Uganda.

Karabayinga warned that the drugs are not only a danger to people’s health but also destroy the society by turning those who drink into criminals Karekezi Silas, the Commander of Muhoza police station said that ‘kanyanga’ is being infiltrated through Butaro sector in Burera, and was seized in Cyuve sector.

The drugs were burnt as residents witnessed.  Karekezi said the perpetrators are normally arrested after getting information from those who engage in consuming the marijuana.
