Police in Rusizi District are holding a 25-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his father. The resident of Nsahaha sector, Nyeji cell, allegedly attacked his 53-year-old father with an axe after the suspect returned home late at night drunk. The incident took place on Monday, Police said. The suspect was under the influence of alcohol after consuming illicit local brew, locally called Muriture, according to Police. He allegedly accused his father of delaying to open for him after he returned home. Sources say when the father opened the door, he was met with a vicious swing of an axe on the forehead, which sent him sprawling on the ground. He was saved by neighbours, after they heard him screaming for help. The suspect tried to flee, but he was intercepted by the neighbours and local authorities, who handed him over to the Police. He is currently detained at Muganza Police Station, while his father was taken to Mibirizi Hospital for treatment. According to Police, the suspect will be charged with aggravated assault and battery under Article 148 of the Penal Code. Supt. Urban Mwiseneza, the Western Region Police Spokesman, who confirmed the incident, warned the public against consumption of illicit brew. He also urged them to desist from excessive drinking, which might lure them into other criminal activities."Consumption of illicit brew and other drugs is the engine to most other domestic crimes, and a crime itself punishable by law,” he warned.
