NICKI MINAJ HAS become something of an expert in the skill of commanding attention, whether it be negative or positive. An attention whore. Have you seen the video to her song, "Bees In The Trap”?I did, and to be honest, found it reminiscent of the atmosphere one would find in a Las Vegas strip club. Excess amounts of half-naked booty strutting in each scene. Nicki is offering admiration and approval to the half-nude girls in the video, who appear like lesbians. While she may still be criticised for her overtly sexual videos and lyrics, I personally have no issues with Minaj. She has made a conscious decision that this is the kind of art she wants to be remembered for, and there is a huge adult audience that obviously enjoys it.My only beef with Nicki at this point is the fact that she has been questioned several times, in interviews, about the fact that her audience is largely made up of kids and adolescents, and whether she feels guilty about this. And her carefully crafted response has always been the same; "I don’t make music for kids. "Girl, if indeed it is true that you feel that way about your music, that it is not tailored to the enjoyment of kids, then why do the same things that are sure to attract kids and not adults?Maybe we should first break down the character that is Nicki Minaj, beginning with her physical appearance; ever suited in an array of big multi-color hair, such that to the casual observer, she looks like a fully decorated Christmas Tree, or better even, an apparition of the rainbow. This hair comes in many shades ranging from Nicki’s signature pink, purple, yellow, red…you name it. She will team this with equally colorful sandals/boots, body suit and a kaleidoscope skirt. Not to say that I am a fashion guru, hell no. But outside of special events like Halloween (what else?), I am yet to see any grown woman indulge in Minaj’s fashions. You know who likes to dress like a Teletubbies cartoon character? Little girls.Little girls love to be covered in colours, glitter, and anything that shines. Little girls are the ones who see Nicki as some sort of fairy, hence the need to emulate her dressing style. When she is not trying to look like a fully decorated Christmas tree, she is getting up to even worse; she is being all slutty, with all or half of her butt cheeks hanging out for the whole world to see. So the kids who watch her videos on YouTube get to see these two totally different extremes.Of course, it is not her fault that Nicki’s music attracts kids. Far from it! On the contrary, the point is that it is not by chance or mistake that Nicki attracts a younger audience. Obviously, this is a carefully choreographed project on the part of her record label. -
