Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente launched a series of transformative projects worth billions of francs in the Western Province as Rwanda celebrated its 29th liberation anniversary on Tuesday, July 4.
In Rugerero Sector, Rubavu District, the premier inaugurated Rugerero Model Village, which will serve as a home to 120 families. The village also includes an early childhood development center, a school with smart classrooms, a health center, various playgrounds, a mini market, and beautiful plantation and landscaping.
These projects were constructed by the Ministry of Defence and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF).
While liberation day celebrations took place in different parts of the country, Ngirente dedicated the model village to the residents of Rubavu, describing it as a special gift from President Paul Kagame. He also expressed his condolences to the families affected by the recent floods and landslides in the area, assuring them of the government&039;s support during their recovery.
Among the lives lost during the May floods and landslides, 29 were from Rubavu district. Ngirente addressed the hundreds of citizens present, acknowledging the remarkable achievements of the past 29 years and emphasizing the importance of sustaining and accelerating the well-being of Rwandans.
"These transformational projects inaugurated today are a testament to what we have achieved. However, it is crucial that we take ownership and maintain them," Ngirente said. He urged the community to preserve the schools and houses, emphasizing that they were not for sale. Celebrating liberation, he explained, should include a commitment to caring for and preserving such facilities.
Ngirente also encouraged residents to adopt sustainable business models to maximize the potential of amenities like the mini-market, which can accommodate 120 vendors. "We must utilize these facilities to the fullest. It is imperative that our students attend school; otherwise, our celebration of liberation is incomplete," he added.
The RDF, through routine and annual Citizen Outreach Program activities, plays a significant role in Rwanda's economic transformation. In previous years, they constructed 14 model villages, benefiting 318 families, and 286 housing units for Genocide survivors, supporting 561 families. Additionally, the RDF built 20 bridges across 8 districts, 400 kilometers of roads across 15 districts, and 11 medical facilities. The country also witnessed agricultural and livestock initiatives across all districts.
Rwanda's liberation struggle commenced on October 1, 1990, culminating in the overthrow of the genocidal regime on July 4, 1994.
