As Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States of America, was sworn into office for a second term on January 21st 2013, all fashionista’s eyes were on his beautiful wife, First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), Michelle. Traditionally, the inauguration of the US president is on January 20th of the year following the general elections. This year, the 20th fell on a Sunday, which meant a private swearing in ceremony took place at the White House on Sunday, but the large public ceremony took place on Monday. Michelle wore a custom, navy Reed Krakoff, silky, A-line dress with a matching cashmere cardigan and paired it with black pointed patent low-heeled pumps. Her oldest daughter Malia wore an H&M dress, a fashion brand favourite based out of the UK, with layered black shirt. The youngest Obama family member, Sasha, wore a plum lace dress from Plenty, a division of American designer Tracy Reese. For the public ceremony, an event flooded with people and singing sensations like Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson, the ladies in the Obama family could not have looked more beautiful. The Obama children stayed bright and youthful in tailored bold coats: Malia in a J. Crew ensemble and Sasha in a creation by Kate Spade. Their mother wore a gray checkered Thom Browne coat with a matching dress. She accessorized with a J. Crew belt and a statement Cathy Waterman necklace. She also wore matching grey and suede boots, for a sophisticated, chic look. The most anticipated look of Michelle Obama was for the inauguration ball: the one that threw Jason Wu catapult into designer stardom in 2009 when Michelle wore his white, one-shouldered piece to the event. There were fifteen designers who sent in dresses for her and her style team to choose from. No one, not even the designer, knew what she would wear when she walked on stage. As she emerged at the inauguration ball in a red, chiffon and velvet custom halter neck gown, she dazzled the room. The same designer she made famous four years ago was again showcased on the historical evening. She paired her red dress with Jimmy Choo shoes, one of her favourite brands. All of us fashionistas around the world applaud Michelle for being a model of beauty and grace. She reminds us that we can be successful, high-powered women—while still wearing spectacular clothes. That’s the fashion scoop for this week. Got a thought? Trend? Style you hate? Send it my way.
