Sparkle is the last movie the late singing sensation, Whitney Houston, starred in. The diva is Emma, a mother of three daughters, who are trying to follow in her footsteps to stardom. Emma’s daughters Sister (Carmen Ejogo), Delores (Tika Sumpter) and Sparkle (Jordin Sparks) form a trio Sister and Her Sisters managed by Stix (Derek Luke), Sparkle’s boyfriend. They always perform at night without Emma’s consent until she finds out while watching TV and sees them perform. She tries to stop them but Sparkle stands her ground and tells her mother that it is a God given talent which cannot be covered anymore. Jordin Sparks, the 2007 winner of American Idol acts as Sparkle, a shy songwriter who later in the movie steps out of her comfort zone to follow her dreams of being a star, truly gives an outstanding performance with her incredible voice. However, even though the movie has some of the most recognizable faces in the industry, it doesn’t deserve the hype it was given when it hit the cinemas. Its one of those movies you watch once and then store away. I would have preferred a scene with Delores feeling guilty about killing Satin (Mike Epps) even though it was in self defense. But after the actual incident everything is normal, with Sister taking the blame. For instance not once does Delores visit Sister in prison yet she is the one who committed the crime. If I was to rate the movie, I would give it 4 out of 10. However, that is just me. Enjoy the movie.
