He shot to fame in 2010 after winning East Africa’s top music competition, Tusker Project Fame. Back then, Alpha Rwirangira’s mission was to entertain, educate and bridge the gap between younger artists and the older ones. Many old people had lots of hope in him. He seemed to be a well refined young man, born-again and well cultured.He was our saviour from the bubblegum music that had for long characterised Rwanda’s music industry – the kind of music you would listen to and discard almost immediately. Alpha’s first songs didn’t disappoint; songs like Songa Mbele and  Come to me  attested to his lyrical maturity and vocal dexterity. However, last year, some fans were flabbergasted when the singer dropped African Swagga. African what? Many would ask. Some folks reached for their dictionaries to look up the meaning of swagga in vain. She is an African woman/she got the swagga/she got the swagga,” Alpha sings in the song. African Swagga is now very popular with the young folks, but what remains to be seen is whether the older ones hang onto their former idol.
