No one needs to be briefed about the importance of having a security guard at their home, office or any other enclosure housing people or valuable items. 25-year-old Yvonne Ikitegyetse works as a security guard at the rear entrance of Aigle Blanc building opposite the Ministry of Justice headquarters in Kimihurura. She gave Society Magazine an insight on what her day’s work is like. She wakes up at the crack of dawn, says a prayer then hits the shower. A hasty breakfast follows and by 6:30am, she is at her workplace.Changing from casual wear to her work uniform is what she does first, after which she takes over from where her night shift colleague stopped. Her day’s activities include; monitoring the frequent entrance and exit of visitors and staff cars and making sure that nothing illegal is smuggled in or out.By midday, the hustle and bustle is gone and the weight of her work is lessened. She gets time to grab lunch and take a brief rest before the pressure picks up in the afternoon. At 5:00pm she signs out and heads for home. However, she insists that her love for the job is intact saying, "I love my job to bits. I have never imagined myself doing something else. I believe it’s a calling from God.” Just like every job has its pros and cons ,working as a guard has its undesirable part too like having to endure exceptionally cold nights when assigned the night shift.
