French Ambassador to Rwanda Michel Flesch The New Times / File.

In The New Times issue of January 21, you ran a story under the headline, "France seeks renewed bilateral ties with Rwanda”.I feel for the ambassador (as well as his Rwandan counterpart in Paris) whose mission to improve relations between the two countries is undermined in every way possible by his masters back in France, most importantly by transforming that country into the preferred refuge of the worst of Rwanda's genocidaires. Is there anything the ambassador could really do to induce Rwandans to forgive his government's role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, before, during, and even up to today? I don't know. But he could begin by convincing Paris to let justice be done and to stop working overtime at every opportunity to undermine Rwanda's development efforts.Otherwise his hopes of rapprochement are forlorn.Mwene Kalinda
