A 14-year-old boy was killed on Friday, June 30, in a soil excavation pit in Muhira cell, Rugerero sector, in Rubavu District, local authorities said.

District authorities confirmed the sad incident. According to the acting Mayor of Rubavu district, Deogratias Nzabonimpa the quarry in which the child died had been closed due to operating illegally.

They called upon area residents to shun such illegal activities that put people's lives in danger.

"It’s a pity to lose such a young child. It is a loss to the country and society,” said the Executive Secretary of Rugerero Sector, Evariste Nzabahimana.
