This Heroes’ Day celebrations this year will target youth, especially those in tertiary institutions.In an interview with The New Times, Amb. Ignatius Kamari Karegesa, the Executive Secretary of the National Chancellery for Heroes and National Orders and Decorations of Honour, said their mission is to deepen the understanding of the heroism concept."We want all Rwandans to be involved with the Heroism concept. That’s why we are going to extend awareness campaigns to schools from primary up to universities,” he said."We want Rwandans to emulate their heroes. They (the heroes) should serve as inspiration to Rwandans, especially the youth,” Kamari (pictured) added.The former Rwandan envoy to South African also disclosed that the institution will extend awareness to Rwandans in the Diaspora.Every national, he said, has a role to play in identification of Rwandans who deserve national recognition for their contribution towards the development of the country.Kamari said the celebrations will take place at village levels, during which citizens will share ideas on how best they can strive for and sustain the principles and selflessness that characterises Rwanda’s heroes. There will be laying of wreaths on the Heroes Mausoleum in Remera, where some of the national heroes, including Maj. Gen. Fred Gisa Rwigema, were laid to rest.Other heroes remembered on the day include King Charles Mutara Rudahigwa III, former Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, Michel Rwagasana, Felicite Niyitegeka and the Nyange students.
