Eatingout: Cheers: I’ll drink to that

When one thinks of Butare you think about the National Museum, the university and that’s pretty much it. What if I told you that if you love international fast food, then maybe Butare would be your best bid for a juicy hamburger and tasty pizza? You would possibly think that I was a liar. However, without any exaggeration, some of the best meals I’ve ever had in Rwanda have been courtesy of Cheers proprietor, Mr. Hassan Chakra. Mr. Chakra, a native of Lebanon, in his own words believes that “fast food can change people’s perceptions on the way food is enjoyed”.

A restaurant to delight. (Photo / S. Ntayombya).

Mr. Chakra, a native of Lebanon, in his own words believes that "fast food can change people’s perceptions on the way food is enjoyed”.

Although he also thinks the concept of fast food was alien to many in Butare, he believes it’s catching on. And why shouldn’t it?

Cheers is a delightful establishment. Located within the Matar Supermarket just opposite the Ibis Hotel, Cheers is an intimate eatery, the seating is cozy and the smell of coffee is mouthwatering.

Although bare walls could do with a little colour, maybe some art, the area is certainly clean and well maintained. And surprise, surprise the service is quick and friendly.

I paid a visit to Cheers with four friends for dinner and none of us were disappointed. To drink we ordered freshly squeezed ice cold lemonade and fresh fruit cocktails.

Starters included rarely seen Caesar Salad sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, Cheese Quesadilla (which, Hassan informed me, is a Mexican Lebanese dish), and Fahitta Chicken which is a grilled chicken sandwich with a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’, which renders it heavenly.

The main meal included a pizza topped with spicy sausage, minced beef, ham, lasagna (which was a bit of a disappointment - a bit too soggy), and hamburgers.

Dessert was fruit salad topped with strawberry ice-cream. So, what was our verdict? Cheers was awesome! The prices you ask?

Well, the entire meal for five people cost only Frw25,000. Whenever you are in Butare and you have an urge for fast food…make sure that you pay a visit to Cheers. It’s worth it.
