The national cycling team, Team Rwanda, comprising of six cyclists have left for Gabon to take part in the 2013 La Tropicale Amissa Bongo International Cycling Tour scheduled for January 14-20.
The national cycling team, Team Rwanda, comprising of six cyclists have left for Gabon to take part in the 2013 La Tropicale Amissa Bongo International Cycling Tour scheduled for January 14-20. The contingent includes Nathan Byukusenge, 33, Hassan Rukundo, 23, Bonaventure Uwizeyimana, 20, Jean Bosco Nsengiyumva, 20, Valens Ndayisenga, 19, and Jérémie Karegeya, 20.Speaking to Times Sport the cycling federation’s secretary, Emmanuel Murenzi, said that the focus now is on young riders. "We have changed strategy and decided to give the young riders a chance to compete in big competitions which will give them exposure.”The team, captained by Byukusenge, is accompanied by Coach Jonathan Boyer, Team Mechanic Jimmy Lacroix and physical trainer, Obed Ruvogera.This year’s competition has attracted 15 teams from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Morocco and Rwanda.Professional clubs expected to take part include; Europcar (France), Cofidis (France), Lampre-Merida (Italy), Lotto-Belisol (Belgium), Groupement Sportif Oil (Algeria) and Adrien Niyonshuti’s side MTN-Qhubeka (South Africa).Last year, Team Rwanda finished seventh, making it the third best team in Africa, behind Eritrea and Morocco.
