KIGALI - The Director General of Immigration and Emigration Department, Anaclet Kalibata, has warned the public over emerging conmen masquerading as immigration officials.
The warning follows the arrest of a man who posed as an immigration official at the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) offices in Remera.
"Police is still investigating that case, after which we shall carry out a public awareness campaign depending on the results of the investigations,” Kalibata said.
"If there is a specific case requiring us to go to offices, we always inform them that our employee is on the way. Our people always present our identity cards and have uniforms,” he explained.
On Monday, police in Kicukiro arrested 33-year old Yousuf Rugambwa after he tried to defraud Abdallah Baguma, the Personal Assistant to the Executive Director of NCHE, Pamela Abbot.
Rugambwa allegedly walked into the office of Baguma on Monday morning, and identified himself as Joseph Kagabo working with Immigration and Emigration Department.
Baguma told The New Times that he became suspicious and alerted the Immigration and Emigration Department, resulting in Rugambwa’s arrest.
Karibata also revealed that his office had received four forgery cases of Laisser Passer (movement permits) and a visa.
