Rwamagana–One person died on the spot after being knocked down by a speeding commuter taxi at Musha Sector, Rwamagana district over the weekend.The deceased was identified as Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, 17 and the body was taken to Rwamagana Hospital for postmortem.Claude Ndahimana, an eye witness told The New Times that the taxi was driving at a very high speed."We lost our good colleague…we were coming from work at Musha mines, heading to our home in Gishari. Coaster drivers are ever speeding and dangerous to the public; unfortunately we don’t see serious measures taken to punish them. Road carnage must end,” he said angrily.Police said the accident was due to over speeding and poor mechanical condition of the vehicle.  The driver of the commuter taxi belonging to ‘Excel Tours Company’ is currently held at Rwamagana Police station. Police added that most accidents in the area are due to reckless driving coupled with slippery roads because of the rainy season."Rain makes the road slippery and reduces visibility.  It can make it more difficult to stay on a road, stop, or avoid colliding with other vehicles. If you can’t stop your car in time that’s when accidents happen,” Eastern Region Police Spokesperson Superintendent Benoit Nsengiyunva said. He warned drivers against reckless driving and over speeding.Meanwhile, Supt. Nsengiyunva urged drivers to regularly take their vehicles for inspection to avoid hefty fines or impounding of their vehicles."We are vigilant to take in for questioning people driving vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions,” he said.
