THE Rwanda National Police yesterday called for peaceful New Year celebrations."People should behave in a way which doesn’t disturb public order during the New Year celebrations,” said the Police Spokesman, Superintendent Theos Badege.Badege appealed to entertainment places to avoid noise pollution. "They have to make sure the entertainment doesn’t break the rules on noise pollution,” said Badege, singling out bar owners.Philbert Neretse, the manager of La planète, a discothèque located at Kimihurura, KBC complex in Kigali said his place has a sound proof system to avoid noise pollution.Neretse said they expect the number of revelers to shoot up for the New Year celebrations."We increased the number of guards from three to five because it’s difficult to manage revellers celebrating end/start of the year,” he said.The police assured the public of increased vigilance during the celebrations.To avoid drink-driving, Badege said they have increased the number of traffic police on the roads.The police also asked people to increase vigilance for personal property by securing their houses and urged the public to call the emergency toll free number 122 in case of emergency.Meanwhile Badege also revealed that road accidents, robberies and assaults, the major crimes during the festive season reduced during the Christmas week of December 27-31, compared to previous years.The Police recorded 12 accidents which claimed two lives during the Christmas season while four cases of assault were reported.Six cases of robberies were also reported. Badege said there is reason to say that the festive season has been peaceful.He attributed the low levels of crime to vigilance of the public.
