Commercial bank sinks Frw6m in golf Open

After bankrolling two annual monthly mugs from 2005-2007, Rwanda Commercial Bank (BCR) is back at it once again with the inaugural BCR Open slated this weekend.

The Open that tees-off tomorrow (8:30am) at Kigali Golf Club has attracted 60 golfers, one of the biggest turn-up this year.

And with plenty of prizes to be won, everybody expects a fascinating tournament. For this particular tournament, golfers have been drawn in pairs; a high-handicap player with a low handicap player.

"The essence of this arrangement is to encourage teamwork. The event is about finding out which pair worked most efficiently and effectively at the end of the day,” Byusa said.

BCR’s managing director David Kuwani (handicap 18) who has been paired with Louis Kamanzi (handicap 28) in the 18-hole event yesterday emphasized the essence of the event saying that this system encourages other golfers to play better.

"You will always play better if you play with a good player,” Kuwani said before adding, "This is a popular style of play in other golf courses so it is good to have it here as well”.

The club president Jack Kayonga and captain Marcel Byusa yesterday credited BCR for their ever-flowing support to the sport.

"They (BCR) are undoubtedly one of our key sponsors and partners and we are enjoying a very cordial relationship with them,” Kayonga said.
