TEN people yesterday sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling in collided with a Fuso truck in Katende along the Mpigi–Kampala road in Uganda. No death was reported. The bus, registration number, UAM 297L, belonging to Horizon Bus Company, was heading to Kampala through the Kyanika border post from Goma, the main city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Seven of the injured passengers are Rwandans and, by the time we went to press, they were still undergoing treatment at Mulago hospital in Kampala. Vincent Sekatte, Uganda’s Deputy Police Spokesperson, told The New Times that the accident occurred when the driver of the bus tried to overtake the Fuso Tipper Lorry."It was a clear case of reckless driving because the bus driver was over-taking the lorry in a sharp corner,” Sekatte said.He said that the bus driver fled after the accident and that both the bus and lorry were held at the Mpigi Police Station."We are examining this case because a bus belonging to the same company knocked a Boda Boda cyclist on Wednesday evening,” he said.   As a step towards curbing accidents during the festive season, Ugandan police recently launched an action plan to curb the road carnage in the country.Uganda’s Inspector General of Police, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, said they have strengthened deployment of integrated highway police officers to work with local communities along all the highways and Kampala Metropolitan policing area.
