There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than with a take-notice sparkle piece: this New Year ’s Eve, dress yourself in sequin! We’ve all seen it, the glorious little shiny discs that adorn purses, dresses, jewelry, shoes and jackets. Now its time to make an assessment and see how your closet is holding up.St. John, an American fashion label with world-renowned women as their public face including supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Angelina Jolie, is an unlikely yet beautiful fashion label to bring sequin dresses to their full luster this season.  The label has several solid sequin dresses in their collection: ranging from soft gray to pale pink to gold. Their most formal gown, a full length plunge cowl back dress with a simplistic v neckline and thigh high slit, adds tremendous glamour and sophistication to the cheerful sequin. They also took the sequin much more modern in another piece, with a bateau neck orchid, blouse bodice keyhole back dress. Across the sea, British fashion house Burberry has also taken its version of the sequin dress: a beautiful golden number with a plunge v neckline and black satin waist ribbon. Italian favorite, fashion house Dolce &Gabbana, extended their use of sequin to their accessories line: with a lavish crystal and silver chain shoulder strap and all over sequin bag with their iconic logo on a gold plate. Their bag, dubbed ‘Miss Charles’ bag, comes in both black and gold options. Classically more fun and flirty, this year’s Hollywood Academy Awards, colloquially knows as the Oscars, had dozens of stars up and down the red carpet with full length sequin gowns. American reality star and daughter of OzzyOsbourne, Kelly Osbourne, donned a gorgeous black sequin floor length dress with a turquoise sequin pattern around the shoulders and bust. The dress had an air of vintage feel, with flapped shoulders, and a subtle mermaid tale. Octavia Spencer, winner of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in the Civil War American drama The Help, looked the Hollywood best, with a beautiful pearl and sequin dress, with a flattering pattern of a starburst at the waist. Sequin looks best when paired with other luxurious and party fabrics: patents, satin and velvet. If you are wearing a sequin mini dress, black suede pumps are a perfect way to go. If you have a gold sequin clutch, pair with a black satin dress. Also think about more modern styles: one shoulder and shifts.  To keep the look sophisticated: for a shorter dress, choose long sleeves. For a longer dress, choose a plunging or asymmetrical neckline. With all your New Year’s Eve preparation, you’ll wow the room with glamour when you make your entrance! That’s the fashion scoop for this week. Got a thought? Trend? Style you hate? Send it my way.
