Four peacekeepers killed, one injured in Darfur

KHARTOUM – United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) announced Saturday that four of its peacekeepers were killed and one injured in Sudan’s Darfur region."Four of the mission soldiers were killed on December 20, and a fifth injured,” Aicha Elbasri, UNAMID spokesperson, said in a press release.The available details indicated that a UNAMID soldier shot three of his colleagues dead and then killed himself, she said, noting that the incident took place at the mission base at Mukjar area in West Darfur State.UNAMID took over the peacekeeping mission in Darfur from the African Union Mission in Sudan on December 31, 2007. The mission was planned to deploy 26,000 members of military and police to protect the civilians in the region, who have been suffering from a civil war since 2003.
