GASABO - Rwandan students studying at Oklahoma Christian University (OC) have done very well, with a number of them getting awards for their academic excellence. This was revealed by Al Branch, OC’s Executive Vice President during a reception at the Christ’s Church in Gaculiro last Sunday.
The event was organised by Branch and four members of OC board of trustees, Richard and Pat Lawson, as well as Mark and Susie Jackson. The purpose was to recognize the 30 presidential scholars who are studying at, or are preparing to join the university.
The ceremony was attended by Education Minister Daphrose Gahakwa, and the Minister of Gender, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, who was honoured for her part in seeing this initiative through during her tenure as Education minister.
"Not only are Rwandan students performing well academically, but they are making positive contributions to our campus community,” Branch said. He added that the students are continuing to be effective ambassadors for Rwanda.
"I believe that the Rwandan presidential scholars programme is one of the best efforts our University has had the privilege of working with. Our partnership is extremely important to us and we continue to pray that the seeds we are planting together will grow into a bountiful harvest for the country,” Branch noted.
The ten students who pioneered this effort two years ago are currently back in Rwanda for summer internships and to reconnect with their families, before they return to the US to complete their last two years of education.
Also present at the function was the third group of 10 students who have just been selected by the National Examination Council to benefit from the programme. The second group is in Oklahoma, but their family members were present at the event.
