Yesterday, thousands of Rwandans and friends of Rwanda paid their last respects to the fallen Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Aloisea Inyumba, who was eulogised as a selfless freedom fighter, patriotic leader and gallant daughter of Africa.A look back at her life reveals a lady with an enduring character that inspired hope in the face of despair, and delivered where many either hesitated or resigned altogether.Inyumba was not only a revolutionary and fearless leader but also a loving mother, a reliable partner and trusted confidant. She will be remembered for her lasting love for Rwanda and the people of Rwanda, a virtue for which she would put her own life on the line.President Paul Kagame’s testimony about Inyumba, whom he worked with both during the liberation struggle and later in government, summed it all up; here was a woman who braved bullets to provide life-saving support during the RPA struggle and who was always keen on performing her duties with enthusiasm and perfection. The late Inyumba dedicated her lifelong service to the nation and we are grateful. While the nation continues to mourn her and to celebrate her rich life, it is time for everyone to reflect, and ask themselves what they have done for the country. Inyumba may be no more, but her legacy lives on.We should all draw inspiration from her life and seek to emulate her. Rwanda would be far better off with thousands of Inyumbas. It’s a character the young generation has a lot to learn from as much as the old folks. That’s the most fitting way we can forever honour her memory. RIP Aloisea Inyumba.
