Editor,Last Saturday’s Manchester derby was certainly the ultimate encounter of football rivals. The two Manchester teams are at the summit of the English Premier League. Manchester City are the reigning champions and had gone two years without losing at the Etihad, an amazing record. But they were up against a side that had ruled Manchester for so many years. And Manchester United were at the top of the league table, and eager to wrestle the title from City’s grasp and win its 20th domestic title.Even as City won both of their encounters last season, including that humbling 6-1 away victory, United had finished the season in second place, only losing the trophy to City on goal difference – and virtually with the last kick of the game during that memorable City-QPR final game of the season. So last Saturday’s game was pitting the best two sides in English football. The stakes were high, and pressure was on both sides. Thankfully, United won the tie in style, with that dramatic last-gasp free-kick from that Dutch sensation – RVP. There could not have been a sweeter revenge, winning tense and close ties like that one, and do so at Etihad, and in injury-time!Now, Manchester United have a six-point cushion at the top, with their noisy neighbours firmly in second position. This game should propel United to a string of wins. Even as it remains so early on in the season, it is clear that United have the potential to go on and win back the trophy. They have beaten every big club in the league. A 20th league title for the Red Devils would be a fitting gift to long-time manager Alex Ferguson as he prepares to leave the stage.Peter Makombe,Kicukiro
