Today’s post will be a bit depressing but it is real - since when have I ever told you otherwise?Adult life is grossly overstated, so if you are still in college and are reading this, enjoy life and appreciate the fact that you are still able to have weekends, work if you want, pass or fail your classes if you want and basically have a lot of control over your life.Yes, I know it doesn’t make sense because university sells you the dream of freedom after you get that paper with your name on it and you get to have a career you love and start giving back to the world. Not true…well at least for the first 5-10 years of your working life.I studied a programme that sold me and my classmates’ dreams of contributing to the world while at the same time being able to rub shoulders with who’s who in the world. You wouldn’t be rich but it would be fun and every night you would go to sleep knowing you’ve played your part in making this a better world. How can I put this in a classy way? Umm it’s all B*llshit! What they don’t tell you is that in this economy, jobs are hard to find and your lack of years of experience will also make you come up short. You will have to move back home with your parents and take jobs you really don’t like.I can’t complain that much, I have had amazing jobs, jobs my fellow classmates would never dream of having and I’m learning a lot about the field and about myself. My issue is, I guess, that no one warned me how hard it would be to get yelled at by the boss, the long hours, and the lack of a social life or even time to run your own errands. I know, I know, you have to put in the work to see the results but honestly my expanding waistline and lack of sleep are getting to me and sometimes, I sit in a corner and re-evaluate my life. I will pretend this is not what I want but at the end of the day, I would not have it any other way.Yes there are bad days and then there are good days - the days when you get compliments from your boss about something you did not think they noticed, the days when you do have a very productive workday and go home early and of course, pay day, when you go out with your friends and have that well deserved drink with your hard earned cash. Yes there will be bad days and good days but as young women, this is a cold world and if we want to survive, we have to suck up those tears, take a couple of breaths and go back in there and kick some a**.
