Day by day our environment is being destroyed by human activities which increase global warming. Below are some very do-able things you can do to play your part in saving the environment.

Saving energy

Defrost fridges and freezers regularly to keep them running efficiently. Keep saucepan lids on, so you can turn down the heat. Use the shower rather than the bath - you’ll use an average 80 litres less water.

Remember to turn-off lights when you leave the room. Switch off your TV, video, DVD player, computer and stereo when not in use. They still use power on standby mode. Don’t leave mobile phone chargers plugged in.

The great thing about the above suggestions is that they will also save you money!

Plant more trees

Trees and plants turn carbon dioxide in the air into oxygen – this is crucial. Some Rwandans don’t seem to be too far away from environmental friendliness because they have endeavored to plant green vegetation around their homes. But still more vegetation is required.

Waste disposal

Don’t just throw out unused medicine, paint, and used batteries. They always flushed down into the drainage systems whenever it rains thus contributing to water contamination.

One little pill doesn’t seem like a big deal, until you start thinking how poisonous it is in that water you use to brew your morning cup of coffee.

Things like medicine, motor oil, and paint shouldn’t go down the drain, and other items should be left out of trash heaps, too.

Smoke control

Try to eliminate the smoke that is left off into the skies by using smoke filters most especially in industrial areas and automobiles. Such smoke completely destroys the environment and it’s very deadly to human lives.

More other odorless gas churned out by idling cars and poorly vented or malfunctioning fireplaces, woodstoves, and fuel-powered appliances kills hundreds and sickens thousands of people every year.

Advice for farmers

Rotation systems of farming could help your nearby gardens regain soil fertility. Avoid or eliminate pesticide use in the home and garden as they effect the ozone layer.

There is a hole in the ozone layer that allows ultra-violent rays from the sun to hit the earth directly a condition harmful to our environment.
