Bank of Kigali staff planted about 11,000 trees on six hectares to protect the environment in the monthly community work (Umuganda). The trees were planted in Akirwanda Village, Kigali Sector, Nyarugenge District.The bank says the event on Saturday was part of the institution’s community social responsibility (CSR)."Environment protection is one of the key pillars under our CSR programme. We recognise the importance of conserving the environment and we take tree planting as a legacy for the future generations,” said Lawson Naibo, Chief Operating Officer, Bank of Kigali.The bank opportunity to interact with the village community.Apart from protecting the environment, trees planted are said to create beautiful scenery in the area. Local leaders and residents pledged to work with BK staff in following up on the trees.This month’s community work focused on soil erosion control campaign which was held under the theme "Healthy Forests, Healthy People.” The government is targeting to have 30 per cent of the country’s surface area covered by forests.
