JANE Kayitesi, 19, and Patrice Baraka, 23, were on Friday crowned Miss and Mr Mt Kenya University Rwanda respectively. The two were crowned at a colourful ceremony held at Sports View Hotel in Remera.Kayitesi, who is in her first year pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Management beat the other nine contestants in what turned out to be a hot contest.Baraka, who is also a first year student of Bachelors in Information Science, brushed off competition contested from seven other contenders. The ceremony kicked off as early as 7pm and at around 1am, the MC announced the best contestants in different categories, beginning with Miss and Mr Popularity, Photogenic, Creativity as well as the 2nd and 1st runners-up.Eventually, Kayitesi and Baraka were announced the winners of the pageant, sending their fans into wild celebrations."It has not been easy, but I am happy that I have finally made my dreams come true after working tirelessly,” Kayitesi told The New Times shortly after. She partly attributed her success to the training the contestants underwent in preparation for the pageant, saying it significantly improved her capacity and skills.Baraka could also not hide his excitement, stating that his win came as a surprise and as his expectations were really low.The two walked away with cash prizes worth Rwf300, 000, each. They will also have a one year package of Sulfo Rwanda products as well as a one year scholarship. The first and second runners-up on the other hand were Gloria Ayeera and Frediane Gisa, respectively. On the side of male contestants, it was Gael Karinamaryo and Moses Ndungutse who emerged first and second runners-up respectively. They were all rewarded Rwf 100,000, a one semester scholarship and a six month package of Sulfo Rwanda products.Sonia Batamuliza won Miss Popularity while Patrice Baraka was Mr. Popularity. Ingrid Karangwayire and Ndungutse Moses were Miss and Mr Photogenic respectively.Miss Creativity went to Gisa, while Alexandre Nyaminani took, the male version of the title, on top of the Rwf100, 000 cash prize on top of other goodies. There was great entertainment from various established and upcoming musicians alike for about an hour before the contestants hit the highway to showcase their catwalk skills in different costumes as well as a question and answer session.A power cut however almost ruined the event with no standby generator in place, forcing the show to come to a halt for close to an hour.Apart from the performers who included King James, there was entertainment from Missile Dance Group from Kenya, made up of Mt Kenya students as well as Ableman Ronnie, commonly known for the ‘Stamina’ dance. The event was attended not only by students of Mt Kenya University but also government officials and friends of the school. This was the second time Mt Kenya University organised the event after one that was held last year.
